Bikers Lounge / Re: Mileage of Yamaha RX135 on road ?
« on: November 02, 2012, 01:17:22 PM »
And you will not believe, my recently acquired RE Thunderbird 2002 gives 33 kmpl and year 2000 model RX135 gives 30kmph.

Compare the 350cc and 132cc... funny isnt it... Its okay, both are my rides and i enjoy them both. I like the peppiness of the RX and the maturity of the RE.

Cheers!!!

Bikers Lounge / Re: Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-i fairing rattles
« on: November 02, 2012, 10:49:05 AM »
Are you a DIY guy, if yes, dismantle the complete fairing and check whether all the rubber pads/bushes on the fasteners/nuts/bolts and wherever the fairing touches the bike body are in place. Only rubber prevents mettalic/plastic clatter and there is no way you can stop the vibration, but there are ways you can dampen it. Simple problems have simple solutions. Check if all the bolts are tightened properly. Check if all the bolts are available first.

Have you complained the issue to the authorised service centre. Have they solved the problem atleast temporarily. Based on your feedback, we can work together to solve the problem. Cheers...

Bikers Lounge / Re: Wider Handlebar for RE Thunderbird bike
« on: November 02, 2012, 09:23:20 AM »
Read in some forums that we can use RE Std 350 straight handlebars on the TB and the riding position would be good. I dont know whether it will give you the desired wide feel, but i like to experiment when i visit my mechanic next time.

Or else, try this website. They are very responsive and have heard very good reviews.

This will not help you answer your question about battery draining but still I will share for your knowledge sake.

Picture shows the Decompressor. It is used to expel/release pressure inside the cylinder. Have you ever felt the kick start lever is too damn hard to bring it down with a normal kick. That is the time when you use the decompressor lever which operates a valve to open it to release the trapped gasses. This way it frees up the stroke and kicking effort can be lesser.

In self start versions this decompressor action is also done automatically. But in all kick start models, this is done manually. Your mechanic or the previous owner must have removed the whole arrangement with cables. Modern vehicles post 2007 does not need this.

Bikers Lounge / Re: Price for used Yamaha RX135 2003 model
« on: November 02, 2012, 08:38:47 AM »
If both tyres are gone, then it is not even worth 15k. Tyre replacement will cost arourn Rs. 3000 at the minimum, so the asking price can be 12k only. If the bike is maintained well, i mean paint look and smooth engine then 15k can be considered. Is it 4 speed or 5 speed, RX135 or RXG?

And also the price depends on where in India you are located. Metros will be costly, small towns will be cheap. In Bangalore you will have to spend 20k minimum to get a battered rx135. It makes sense to buy bikes from smaller towns ofcourse from the same state(so that you need not register the bike again).

Bikers Lounge / Re: Clunk sound in real wheel - Machismo Royal enfield
« on: November 02, 2012, 08:29:21 AM »
It can be as simple a some tiny pebble from the road stuck on the tread of the tyres and being thrown off inside the mudgaurd of your rear wheel and then the sound stops when the pebble is thrown out. This happens often (click click click sound) on my front wheel.

Do you feel any resistance when you hear the sound, only then you can confirm whether it is a mechanical problem.

Put the bike on centre stand. Rotate the rear wheel by hand and see whether there is anything touching somewhere.

Does your bike have self starter. Do you have decompressor lever on your bike.

Bikers Lounge / RE Thunderbird - Rear end wobbling at 60kmph
« on: October 30, 2012, 06:45:44 AM »
Let me share with you guys that I did have a taste of motorcycle touring on RE Thunderbird 2002 model. There was a friend's marriage at Ambur(on Chennai-Bangalore National Highway). Ambur is 200km away from Chennai. So did a total of 400+ km in the weekend. I have not taken any photographs since being my first trip, i concentrated more on reaching safe without any breakdowns on highway.

Nevertheless, Onward journey, I had a flat rear tyre and had to halt for almost two hours near Vellore.(150 km from Chennai). Otherwise cruised at 80kmph. Had it fixed by a mechanic who is not very well conversant with bullets.

Then on the way back to Chennai, had a wobbly feel on the rear end. The rear tyres was having some imbalance and the bike behaved as though the front tyres and rear are separate units. In that I travelled with pillion, my girlfriend and she too felt the movement. To be more precise, the wobble is not up and down jerk, it is like when i tilt the bike the front end tilts and then back end does not fall by that same angle. The frame did not give a rigid feeling and my confidence in cornering got affected. I suspected some kind of play in the swing arm, but do not know how to check it by myself. I had to reduce the speed to 60kmph but still had a wobbly feel. I also reduced the tyre pressure from 38 to 30psi on the rear(front remaining a constant 22psi) but no effect. Carefully rode and reached Chennai safely. Can you give some pointers what needs to be checked? I am really scared to take the bike for another touring... Please help...

Hmm..
You seems to be quite informative about RE already :)
What exactly AVL is ?

AVL is an Austrian Company which designs diesel engines for truck manufacturers. Our own Royal Enfield approached them in 1998 to design an engine for further production. The RE factory people themselves got bored by following the same engine design since 1950s.

So from 2000 onwards they started manufacturing engines based on AVL's design. This gave better fuel efficiency and power. Then again in 2007 RE merged all the compartments namely clutch case, gear box and engine crank case and called it an UCE engine, which uses common oil for clutch, gear and engine.
